Indian Caste System

Origins and Evolution

The Indian caste system is a complex social stratification system that has played a significant role in Indian history and society. Its origins can be traced back to the ancient Hindu scriptures, such as the Rigveda, which describe a hierarchical society divided into four main castes: Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (merchants), and Shudras (laborers).

Caste Differentiation

Over time, the caste system became more elaborate, with hundreds of sub-castes emerging based on occupation, region, and other factors. Each caste had its own set of rules and customs governing marriage, food, and other aspects of social life. The caste system was reinforced by religious beliefs, such as the concept of karma and reincarnation. People were thought to be born into a particular caste based on their actions in previous lives, and could only improve their status through good deeds.
